Not so much a mobility aid. Just an aid.
I am an avid reader and love the tactile feel of real books, but the problem is that handling them is an issue. I have very bad enthesitis in both hands and the weight of a book would cause pain. After 55 years of reading myself to sleep I had also become habituated to reading while lying on one my side, which was particularly painful. At Christmas I asked Santa for a Kindle and he obliged.
Whilst it rankled to have to re-buy some of my favourites it has been an outstanding success that I would thought I would recommend (not just the kindle though - any e Reader).
I had previously used the kindle app on my phone and Asus tablet. The phone was too small a form factor, resulting in constant page turning whilst the tablet was little too heavy. The kindle is light and and a useful screen size.
TIP: Don't buy an an expensive cover. I bought a grey fabric one with a simple folding cover and elastic snap closer for about a tenner. Because the kindle is light and the cover is fabric it will do things like sit quite happily against your bent knees in bed using friction so you can be hands free. And if you like on your side you can fold the cover back and use it, tent-like to stand the reader on the side, hands free, while you lie down. Works fine unless you need lots of pillows.
It also means you can read by the device's own back light, without disturbing a partner.
The only drawback so far is that when I read lying on my side and the cat decides he wants attention he just bats it out of the way!
Highly recommended
